Lee Fields
Soulfire

I'm always on the look for Lee Fields records and I pay homage to Soul Fire for this release, the first album I have purchased by Mr Fields and just what I was looking for. The first hook for me was a 7" production of a track called 'Shot Down', by Sugarman Co, on the DapTone label and of course featuring lee Fields on vocal. Then came the line with the purchase of a track on Sound Plus, which is featured in the Sevens reviews. Now the album, and I'm saying it's no sinker but for sure, has completely reeled me in. This man puts out vocals like a legend, a truly felt depth and passion. We at Naldertown feel the side B opener 'I don't know where I'm going' should be a classic example of this. So, what happens next? Continuing with side B, 'Clap your hands' will start with a break that'll have you reaching for the sampler, and will also show perhaps the diversity of Lee's vocals and shows no fear of experimenting. So, 'I'm the man' and yes he is, a simply funky track that will take the dance floor and give it the beat punters crave for. I could go on and on but you just gotta listen, the band is totally there for him and works it tight, I'm going to be bold and say, this is street music full of soul and is not going out without some funk. More please.

Mickey and the Soul Generation
Quannum

An absolute diversity of funk! Strongly re-instated into the funk world, mainly thanks to the hard perseverance of one DJ Shadow. Mickey and The Soul Generation records were only really being discovered as rarities in the depths of exclusive crates, until J Davis hunted out some of the band members, and fell upon a complete discography. The album shows a true feeling to the needs of Jazz/Funk, and takes so many angles on approaching these needs. The title track 'Iron Leg' would kick any great funk set off, whilst other tracks like 'Mystery Girl' or classic 'Give Everybody Some' will sink you into a deep groove of raw talent. Its light, its dark, its deep and soulful, heavy and up beat, and sits perfectly filed under funk.
