African Music Machine
Soul Power Records
Two of the best titles taken from the album 'Black Water Gold' and both perfectly demonstrate the elasticity of the bass guitar. Whilst the groove is quite mellow the whole bouncy feel of the bass lines let you have it where you need it and that's right between a funky little riff and a very smooth horn section. Certainly more for the bedroom than the club. This is not such a difficult record to find but it does come and go, most places we try it is there for today gone for tommorrow. Luck is the element.

Andre Williams
Avin Records
A slow easy funk number from Andre Williams, a filthy sax over jingle bells of a drumbeat, nothing like Xmas though. Lots of babble in the background and a cheeky OooohhhWweee from a nice bunch of girlies, seems odd to say, but with that it kind of has a Beatles touch to it, this particular bit of course. I can't imagine The Beatles producing raw funkyness like this but you never know. Very nice groove with it all. We recently bought 'The Stroke' also by Andre Williams. Amazing upbeat dirty funk! Really getting into him. Need more.
This title does come up now and again, as an alternative to our provided sale link, if you are looking on the net try norton records but you will have to e mail them as they do not have it on their web site.

Arthur Monday
Funk 45

The rare tune with some rare vocals, it’s completely unique and charismatic. This guy just rants randomly in the funkiest way imaginable over raw funk, start to end. If you get too much of the vocals flip it to the instrumental and give a full appreciation for the bass line. Expensive for an original copy and rich within its quality, like an old photo, it has grain and grit. You look at it and you contemplate time and how it’s passed, how thing’s were then and are now, a moment in time recorded and impossible to artistically reproduce its originality. ‘But you can try’
Some real punchy beats and a considerate horn section with the aforementioned, a masterpiece!

Barbara Lynn & James Young & The Housewreckers
Fryers Records

Two very nice sides, starting with 'I'm A Good Woman' first released in 1969. Barbara Lynn spent nearly a decade as a recorded artist and had many hits before this one and I'd say this tune definitely stands the test of time. Possibly due to its lyrical content where Barbara Lynn sings very soulfully of her useless lover, or equally as possible for the sweetest, simplest little riff and deep catchy bass line, that make it a top slice of soul.
Oh yeah, the flip, I was completely content with the A side. Awesome funky dance floor number, its got that kind of Bill Cosby, having a lot of fun feel to the horn section and the backing vocals, 'When your hot your hot' very much incite you for the funky party.
Excellent first release on the Fryer label, we're sure they should come consistently.

Partee (Stax)
Nice dirty sax funk, mid tempo groove eases you into a vibrant organ. A raw sound and one We're very into at the moment. Everything is just deep and ruff, from bass to drums and especially the sax.

B/W ?UFO landing? is a collage of dialogue and soul out takes to create a humorous story, couldn't listen to it all the time but you might find a few good vocal samples tucked away in there somewhere.

Billy Garner
BGP Records

In our opinion this is one of the heaviest and best funk tunes we have come across. You will only get the full impact when hearing loud, very loud. I could play it three times a night just to make sure no one missed it. If anything it's the rolling bass line and the super twangy sound of the guitar that I am a sucker for, but the vocals are something else. Garner sure is a match for James brown with some screams that'll make you want to get full on down and get tough in the groove.
As far as we know this was a studio session by Garner that was never released until now, you may find it hard to source this gritty seven but it was also comped on BGP's 'Super Funk vol 2'. I have put a link for this album in 'find out more'. Killer album i might add!
